Some basic facts
Bandung
city is the 3rd largest city in Indonesia (after Jakarta and Surabaya)
and is located on the island of Java. It is the capital of West Java province
with a population of over 2 million mainly Sundanese
people.
The origins of the city started in the 19th century when development was
commenced by the Dutch and it acquired the title of the 'Paris of Java'.
Today, however, it is perhaps difficult to see the city in that light
since many of the parks and gardens that were a feature of the 'Paris
of Java' era have either disappeared or suffer from lack of imaginative
maintenance.
There
are still some fine residential areas in Dago north, Ciumbuleuit , Gegerkalong
and Setia Budi and the surrounding countryside is magnificient, particularly
to the north past Lembang where you can see beautiful tea plantations
and the Tangkuban Prahu volcano.
There are also hot springs at Maribaya - about 5 km east of Lembang, Ciater
about 8 km noth east of the volcano and Batu Kapur hot springs about 10
km from Ciater. The cool climate (and the factory
shopping outlets) invites thousands for weekend visits, particularly
from Jakarta, and the resultant traffic chaos during the day and early
evening leads many city residents to stay at home during these periods.
Expats
For an expat,
few, if any, other places in south east Asia can match this city for its
comfortable climate and living conditions.
Western
style bars and restaurants
are nothing like so widespread as in Jakarta, Surabaya or Bali but the
expat population is significantly smaller in Bandung. Nevertheless, these
amenities can be considered as sufficient to enjoy some varied western
style entertainment.
